Design Statement

The goal of this project is to redesign an already existing transit app. The app I chose is called Qingdao Bus Query which is a Chinese local bus transit app. My goal is to make this app more simple and intuitive, easier for people to use, and to add a navigation system.

What I need to do at this stage is to create a prototype to showcase the key path scenario. To improve the user experience I tested the prototype with other classmates and also searched other UI design online. I want to make the process as simple and convenient as possible so everyone who uses it can understand it quickly, no matter adults, children, or elders.

Hierarchy

My main focus of the changes is to make the users plan their bus trips easier and more conveniently.

First of all, when entering the origin/destination, a function that can recommend related locations based on keywords is added. In addition, users can also choose to turn on GPS automatic positioning. In this way, even if users are confused about their location, they can easily find a suitable station. This feature can also reduce the time required for user input.
Then, in terms of bus route recommendation, the estimated time and the arrival time of the next bus were added. In this way, users can arrange their own time more reasonably without waiting too long, and it can also reduce the time spent by buses detouring long distances, saving users time and bringing a better user experience.

The last addition is a GPS navigation function to find bus stops. I find that for some people, it is difficult for them to find the right bus stop, especially for those who do not take the bus often, they may miss the bus or take the wrong bus because they cannot find the bus stop. This feature allows users to find nearby stations, thereby reducing the bad experience caused by getting lost.

Target Audience

For this mobile application, the target audience would be original users of Qingdao's local bus transit mobile app, and also people who's livign in Qingdao, taking bus as their daily trasits, but connfused about the usage of current app and wants more features.

Problem Statement

The transit app is uploading a new program that will be focusing on the navigation to give users the ability to find the correct bus stops. Users currently have trouble finding the bus stop at an unfamiliar place and they need a navigation program that could lead them to the bus stop they set after opening GPS. The new function of this will make users a better experience, which saves their time in finding the correct bus station and also reduced the chance of taking the wrong bus.

Vision Statement

The transit app is updating a navigation program to make it easier and faster for users to find the correct bus stops. Currently, when people want to go somewhere by bus, there will be recommended bus stops, but some users do not know where the stop is. However, after the update, it will make it much easier for users to find the correct bus stop and reduce the risks of taking the wrong bus. It will also save users time in finding the bus stop. Users that experienced this pain point become frustrated because they're not familiar with every bus stop and the app is not supporting their needs, and this will negatively impact their journey, and promptly find another way to get to their destination.

Design Requirements

  • Search for different bus routes.

  • See estimated time.

  • Use the navigation program.

  • Check the bus schedule.

  • Have arrival tips.

  • Check incoming buses.

  • Use search history.

  • Use the English version.

  • Check nearby bus stops.

  • Can identify stop name  according to location
