Design Statement

My goal is to design a COVID-19 information website that children can understand.

Due to the epidemic, many children have been wearing masks and vaccinated since birth, but they do not understand why they are doing this. I want the kids to have some fun and learn something about COVID-19 so they can protect themselves during the pandemic.

Purpose

This website is designed to give some educational knowledge to young children. I hope they learn about this outbreak while playing and protecting themselves.

Due to the characteristics of the target audience, the dimensions of the web design are iPad size. Users can open the web page and follow the instructions (buttons and arrows) to complete the learning. When the user clicks on different nodes, detailed data will be displayed through the hover.

Final Product

My final product is an iPad web page called "what do you know about covid-19?”. This product is easy to operate and can be used without logging in.

Because the audience of the product is Canadian young children, the interface style is relatively cartoony. Users can learn some covid-19 related knowledge through simple operations: how many cases are there? How many people died? How many people have been vaccinated?

Target Audience

The target audience for the product I'm making is Canadian kids aged 5-8. They have basic reading and comprehension abilities, which means they can learn from this data independently.

Based on user characteristics, the size of the website is iPad size, the data is simple and easy to understand, the overall color is brighter, and there are many small illustrations to arouse children's interest.

The first graph is map. It shows the number of people who have died due to covid in each province. "color it" is like a hook to attract users. The form of map can visually display regional differences, and it is more interesting for children.

I used blue as the main color because blue gives a calm feel. Users don't need to panic over the death toll, they need to face it calmly.

The second is a newly reported case in Canada in April. The most recent information also helps to keep it up-to-date. I used an area chart because it shows both variation and quantity at the same time. Children can use the graph to see that new cases are tapering off.

To keep the color uniform, I still used blue. I included a cartoon of a virus to let users know who caused covid.

The third is the number of Canadians who are fully vaccinated by age. I used the simplest bar graph because it can intuitively display the number, which is easy for users (young children) to read and understand.

I randomly picked some brighter colors to attract users. And I drew icons for different age groups (baby, teen, mid-age, elders) to help users understand.
